PRESS RELEASE
New research from Robert Half explores the top concerns, challenges, and plans of small businesses in Canada for the remainder of the year. A survey of 466 hiring managers at small businesses across Canada reveals that 6 in 10 small businesses in Canada plan to expand hiring before the end of 2023, primarily due to company growth (58 per cent), followed by capitalizing on talent laid off from other companies (35 per cent). In addition, 59 per cent plan to increase contract hiring throughout the rest of this year.
Our research also shows:
· Hybrid work models lead the way. More than half of managers (52 per cent) say their ideal team’s working location is a hybrid model, with a combination of remote and in-office workers. 41 per cent would prefer everyone on their team working in-office full time, and only 7 per cent feel fully remote work is ideal.
· Worker satisfaction and engagement top list of concerns. When asked about their biggest worries during times of economic uncertainty, small business managers report being concerned about keeping their team motivated and engaged (41 per cent), managing and adapting to changes in team structure and responsibilities (40 per cent), managing employees’ stress and anxiety (37 per cent), and retaining top talent (33 per cent).
· Hiring challenges persist. More than 9 in 10 (91 per cent) of small business managers face challenges finding skilled talent. When anticipating what their greatest hiring challenges of 2024 will be, 52 per cent cite finding available candidates with the required skill sets, followed by hiring quickly enough to land the best talent (49 per cent), and meeting candidates’ salary expectations (46 per cent).
· Retention remains crucial. Due to the above challenges, small businesses are increasing their retention efforts by offering retention bonuses contingent on remaining with the company for a predetermined amount of time (31 per cent), increasing compensation (30 per cent), increasing recognition efforts (30 per cent), and expanding/enhancing professional development (30 per cent).
