Sales in the food services and drinking places subsector increased for the sixth consecutive month, rising by 0.4 per cent to $7.1 billion in July, according to Statistics Canada.
Sales were up at full-service restaurants (0.4 per cent), limited-service restaurants (0.1 per cent), special food services (1.4 per cent) and drinking places (1.0 per cent), said the federal agency.
Higher sales were reported in eight provinces, with Ontario (1.0 per cent) and Alberta (1.5 per cent) reporting the highest increases in sales in dollar terms. Quebec (1.3 per cent) and British Columbia (0.4 per cent) posted decreases, it added.
“Two years after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and its subsequent restrictions on the food services and drinking places subsector, unadjusted sales for July were up 19.6 per cent compared with July 2021 and 10.7 per cent higher than in July 2019,” said StatsCan.
“Prices for food purchased from restaurants were up 7.3 per cent in July 2022 compared with July 2021, and prices for alcoholic beverages served in licensed establishments increased 5.5 per cent in the same period. ”
