In this video interview, Nishant Raina, Small Business Lead, Mastercard in Canada, discusses a recent survey indicating the majority of Canadians want to be small business owners and many as well want to start a side hustle.
Raina talks about trends in the sector and generational insights from the data as well as how microbusinesses could be the next wave of small business in the country.
Research from Mastercard includes:
- There is a growing appetite for Canadians to have the ability to do work they are passionate about, while gaining flexibility and opting out of corporate culture;
- 78% of Canadians agree they would rather be a content creator, entrepreneur or small business owner than work a traditional corporate job (9-5 in an office);
- 78% of Canadians have thought about or have started a creator-based business or side-hustle (38% of those have started a content creator-based business or side-hustle);
- 25% of content creators in Canada have reached the $50,000 USD revenue threshold to be considered “microbusinesses.”
